• Has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for Motion Pictures and one for Television
• Joined the Group Theatre after moving to New York and toured with a classical repertory company
• Some of his most celebrated performances were directed by Mark Robson
• Known not only for his versatility, but also for the naturalness and honesty he brought to complex performances, especially as a member of original casts of Arthur Miller plays on Broadway
• Retired in the mid-1980s and so effectively disappeared from the acting world that when restorers were working on restoring "Lawrence of Arabia" and needed him to re-record dialogue, they had to look him up in his hometown telephone directory
• Though it interrupted his career, he served in the military during World War II
