• The Board of Directors of the Florida Water and Sewage Works Operators Association granted an Honorary Life Membership to him in 1954 for reminding the American public that the sewage system existed
• Was drafted during World War II during his early radio career and served as an infantryman in the Battle of Normandy, in which his leg was wounded by shrapnel, leaving him with a lifelong limp
• Played a number of distinct characters in comedy sketches, most famously raiding refrigerators and wearing fedoras as the goofy sewer worker Ed Norton in "The Honeymooners․"
• Was good at mimicking people and would impersonate celebrities and perform character roles on the radio in the 1940s
• Avoided spending social time with other stars, preferring to spend time with the people he met before he was famous
• Loved food, especially sundaes and chocolate bars
• Originally didn't want to play the 72-year-old lead in "Harry and Tonto" because at 55 he felt he was too young
