  • Was drafted during World War II during his early radio career and served as an infantryman in the Battle of Normandy, in which his leg was wounded by shrapnel, leaving him with a lifelong limp
  • Played a number of distinct characters in comedy sketches, most famously raiding refrigerators and wearing fedoras as the goofy sewer worker Ed Norton in "The Honeymooners․"
  • Was good at mimicking people and would impersonate celebrities and perform character roles on the radio in the 1940s
