• Promoted measles and polio vaccines and wrote and produced anti-smoking commercials as C-3PO
• Won a BBC Radio Award in 1974, which secured him a place in their Drama Company
• Studied mime and radio in acting school for three years
• Joined the National Theatre of Great Britain at The Young Vic, and while playing in their production of "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead," he was called to meet George Lucas about a science fiction movie, an offer that he almost refused
• Though he always wanted to be a professional actor, because of his parents' advice, he started out studying to be a lawyer instead
