• Made her screen acting debut in the film "Waterfront Lady" in 1935
• Started out as a stage actress in her childhood, getting her first role in 1925 at the age of 8, and also did radio performances

• Played the Ghost of Christmas Past in the 1938 film version of "A Christmas Carol․"
• Was initially unable to accept her role in "Gone with the Wind" because of her contract with MGM, but studio head Louis B․ Mayer eventually allowed her to take the part because she was such a big fan of the novel
• Was offered the role of Rose in the 1997 film "Titanic," but the part went to Gloria Stuart after she declined
