• Studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Grenoble University before going on to study law at Leeds University
• Started out as a general trainee in the World Service department of the BBC in 1968
• Worked as a producer and director for Omnibus from 1973 to 1975 and created the arts series "Arena" in 1978
• Wrote and produced the documentaries "Leonardo" and "Van Gogh: Painted with Words․"
• Best known as television producer and Creative Director of the BBC
• Is the chairman of the BBC Films Board and the Creative Training Board, and is also in charge of talent management
• Is also on the boards for The South Bank and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences
• Is the host of the arts documentary series "Imagine" on BBC One
