• Graduated from the Baltimore City College and the Peabody Conservatory
• First worked on Broadway doing incidental music for the production "Cinderella on Broadway" in 1920
• Was introduced to musical comedy by Earl Carroll when he helped produced his musical "So Long Letty․"

• Collaborated with singer Al Jolson on a number of his Broadway productions, and also often worked with Eddie Cantor and Earl Carroll
• Established the popular radio show "Your Hit Parade" in 1935
