ABC bounced back from last summer's controversy of the Bachelor in Paradise scandal with a robust 2017-2018 season that included two of television's biggest new hits. The Good Doctor showed that audiences are still into medical dramas, and the revived Roseanne (may it rest in peace, more on that in a bit) performed so well that it has every network looking into their archives for even more reboots. Throw in the solid performance of the new-look American Idol, and ABC had a better than decent season. Most networks hope and pray for one new success each season, ABC got three.
That will help ABC cope with its losses, which includes the exits of its political drama Scandal and the bewitching fairytale series Once Upon a Time. But the biggest loss will be Shonda Rhimes' departure. The Grey's Anatomy creator has committed to Netflix for all her future projects, meaning ABC will have to find a new pipeline for reliable content that fits its brand. Nathan Fillion's The Rookie was given a series order, and ABC's crop of pilots includes the expected abundance of female-led cop thrillers and another show about magic. And of course there was that thing that happened with Roseanne, the cancellation of which turned into one of the biggest stories of the year.
ABC's biggest push this season will be the A Million Little Things, an emotional drama looking to ride the tear-soaked coattails of This Is Us. It's not quite the breakout that This Is Us was, but time will tell if it can grow into another Kleenex-sponsored megahit. The second big "new" show to watch out for is The Conners, which is how ABC responded to firing Roseanne Barr. It just made the show -- Roseanne -- without her. But was she necessary to the show's success?
