In the words of coach Adam Levine, Tuesday's finale for The Voice was "bittersweet."
The Season 3 capper not only crowned a new winner, but it also (temporarily) said goodbye to coaches Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera, who will sit out next season to focus on other projects. (Shakira and Usher will take over their spinning chairs.)
Both coaches — as well as Levine — dressed up for the occasion. Aguilera was adorned with elaborate jewelry and her signature intricate eye make-up while Green sported spiked shoulder pads and Levine rocked a bow tie. Midway through the night, the singing show paid tribute to Aguilera, who was celebrating her 32nd birthday, with a hilarious montage featuring heartfelt messages from her fellow coaches. Green also stopped the show when he came out on the stage in a sleigh dressed as Santa to segue into a segment that awarded all three finalists new Kia cars.
In the hour and 59 minutes leading up to the announcement of the winner, all three finalists had the chance to perform alongside music superstars. Finalist Nicholas David sang with Smokey Robinson. Finalist Cassadee Pope performed with The Killers, Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. Finalist Terry McDermott shared with mic with Clarkson as well as Peter Frampton. Other performers for the star-studded finale included Rihanna and Bruno Mars.
Before giving out the results, host Carson Daly announced that more votes were cast in this finale than any previous season of The Voice. Coming in third was Nicholas from Team Cee Lo. Terry from Blake Shelton's team came in second, making Cassadee from Team Blake the winner! "I'm feeling amazing. Thank you to everyone who voted for me," the 23-year-old West Palm Beach, Fla. native old Daly. "Seriously, it's been so fun."
