Big Irish family, check. U2 obsession, check. Guinness beer drinker, check. Yes, Carson Daly is a token Irishman. All he needs is the shamrock tattoo. As an ode to his roots, the late-night host rallied beside New Yorkers in Herald Square on Wednesday in support of Proposition 3-17, a nationwide effort to make St. Patrick's Day a national holiday. The goal is to bring one million petitioned signatures before Congress on March 17 to demonstrate that the people have spoken."It would be nice for family to be able to legitimately take the day off to be with each other," says Daly. For the big weekend, a Daly family reunion and barbecue is in the works in L.A. In true Irish tradition, he'll also hit up the local pubs. Carson Daly's return to his NBC show Later isn't leading a stampede of other late-night hosts — who have been benched by the writers' strike — back to work.While they are carefully monitoring the situation, none of the more high-profile names want to risk the wrath of the Writers Guild of America, which publicly chastised Daly's decision to go back to work even though he isn't a WGA member. NBC was scheduled to stop paying non-writing staffers of Later, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Tonight Show with Jay Leno at the end of this week, which led to speculation that the shows might return soon afterwards.But a source tells TV Guide that O'Brien, who hasn't been paid since the strike began on Nov. 5, will pick up the salaries of his show's employees next week, following David Letterman's decision to personally fund his payroll through the end of the year. Las Vegas hot spot Tao kicked off its two-year anniversary celebration with a birthday party for Vegas-raised late-night talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel. "There's no better place for a party than Vegas," his girlfriend Sarah Silverman said. "And since Jimmy's family is already here [living in Vegas], it's perfect."
