Showtime has decided not to move forward with The Vatican, TVGuide.com has learned.

The pilot starred Kyle Chandler as Cardinal Thomas Duffy, a charismatic yet mysterious Archbishop of New York whose progressive leanings enthuse some and worry others within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. According to a source, various elements of the drama didn't come together to Showtime's satisfaction.

The Vatican was the first TV project directed by three-time Oscar nominee Ridley Scott (Gladiator). Two-time Oscar nominee Paul Attanasio (House) wrote the pilot, and he and Scott were set to executive-produce with David Zucker (The Good Wife).

25 totally unnecessary spin-offs

Showtime still has a number of other projects in the works, including Penny Dreadful, which is slated to premiere in spring 2014. Drama pilots The Affair, starring Dominic West, and Happyish, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, are both in development.

The news comes days after Friday Night Lightsexecutive producer Peter Berg revealed that the long-awaited FNL movie was not moving forward. During an appearance on Watch What Happens: Liveearlier this year, star Connie Britton expressed interest in reprising her role as Mrs. Coach on the big screen, but also admitted there were some cast members who were against the idea, particularly her TV husband Chandler.

Since his Emmy-winning performance on the football drama, Chandler has appeared in films like Super 8, Zero Dark Thirtyand The Spectacular Now.

Are you sad Chandler won't be returning to small screen?
