Spider-man fans are going to have to wait a little longer to meet Mary Jane Watson.

Shailene Woodley, who takes on the role most recently made famous by Kristen Dunst in the original Spider-Man trilogy, has been cut from the upcoming sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, Entertainment Weeklyreports.

Although Woodley had already begun shooting for the sequel, Mary Jane will now be introduced in the third film, to be released in 2016, instead. The sequel is scheduled to swing into theaters next year.

"Of course I'm bummed," she says in a statement to EW. "But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. MJ only appeared in a few scenes, and I wouldn't trade the experience of working with Andrew and Emma for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film."

In addition to returning stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, Oscar winner Jamie Foxx and Oscar nominee Paul Giamatti will debut in the sequel as two new villains.

Woodley's breakthrough series, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, recently wrapped after five seasons. She is also well known for her critically acclaimed performance in 2011's The Descendants.

Are you sad Woodley won't be in the sequel?
