David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel Preview Bones Season 9

David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel have spent a week at Walt Disney's historic Golden Oak Ranch in Santa Clarita, Calif. But this is not a relaxing getaway for the Bones stars. They are here shooting scenes in which their characters, Special Agent Seeley Booth and Dr. Temperance Brennan, go undercover as their trashy alter egos Tony and Roxy to investigate a murder at a couples' retreat. During a break in filming, Boreanaz, sporting a tank top, red velour sweats and a thick gold chain, sits next to his leading lady, who is dressed down in tight blue slacks and oversize shades, to talk about the drama's ninth season. It's the year the crime-solving duo say "I do" in a guest-star-filled wedding (Ryan O'Neal and Cyndi Lauper reprise their roles as Brennan's dad, Max, and psychic Avalon, respectively) then go on a well-deserved honeymoon. Finally!

TV Guide Magazine: In the Sept. 23 episode, you revisit your popular undercover personas Tony and Roxy. The fans love them. But it's been a while!
Boreanaz: Emily and I were looking back at old episodes. We did Tony and Roxy for the first time some six years ago —
Deschanel: Seven.
Boreanaz: I looked back to get a sense of Tony again. He's evolved a bit and has more spice!
Deschanel: I feel like a New Jersey housewife or a young Mrs. Roper [from Three's Company]. And although no one knows, I even wear a bright bra underneath my shirt.
Boreanaz: Tony knows!
Deschanel: The first time we did Tony and Roxy, in Season 2, our characters went back and forth because Brennan didn't want them to be married, so Booth suggested Tony and Roxy be at least engaged. Even portraying a fake character being married scared her back then.

TV Guide Magazine: And now it looks as though Booth and Brennan will finally tie the knot this fall. But first they have to deal with why Booth backed out of the engagement in last season's cliffhanger, right?
Deschanel: There will be some progress by the second episode, but they're still not in a great place, and she doesn't know why he did what he did — which is why the writers chose to put them in a couples retreat, so they can address some of their issues. She's still hurting.
Boreanaz: The exercises the two of them do at this retreat — a sweat lodge, an obstacle course — bring them a little bit closer to realizing how deeply rooted they are as a couple.

TV Guide Magazine: Serial killer Pelant (Andrew Leeds) forced Booth to put any wedding plans on hold. How soon will we see this madman again? 
Deschanel: The fourth episode.
Boreanaz: Well, he actually secretly appeared in the premiere, in some way. Booth has hit a dead end with this Pelant dilemma, and some people are attacking Booth for what he's done. He's searching for some words of wisdom for how to deal with this terrible situation, and he gets it in all forms.
Deschanel: The premiere also introduced this new Aldo character [Mather Zickel], a former priest friend of Booth's who is now a bartender and Booth's confessor. It's fun to see Brennan meet Aldo and get a glimpse at another facet of Booth's life. He eventually helps guide her as to how best to approach Booth.
Boreanaz: And Freddie Prinze Jr. joins the cast [in a multiepisode arc] as Danny Beck, this CIA guy who is also from Booth's past. It's cool to meet two people who helped shape Booth into the man he is.

TV Guide Magazine: So with the nuptials coming up, might we assume that Pelant's last stand is around the corner?
Boreanaz: Maybe!
Deschanel: I'm more excited about us going on a honeymoon out of the country.
Boreanaz: Someplace nice and warm.
Deschanel: South America, I've heard.
Boreanaz: South America? They should be sending us to the Poconos!
