It was a record-breaking weekend at the box office, as four major new releases each took in more than $20 million apiece for the first time on a non-holiday weekend.
Moviegoers happily committed to The Vow, starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, according to Box Office Mojo. The weepy romantic drama grossed an estimated $41.7 million. Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington's action film, Safe House, stole second with $39.3 million.
An action film for the younger crowd, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, came in at No. 3, digging up $27.5 million. The latest classic Hollywood blockbuster to get the 3D treatment — the reissue of Stars Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace — beamed in $23 million. Last week's top film, Chronicle, completed the top 5 with $12.3 million.
