Box Office: Gravity Stays Strong at No. 1

Gravity held onto the top spot at the box office this weekend, despite an impressive showing from Captain Phillips in its opening weekend.

Gravity held onto the top spot at the box office this weekend, despite an impressive showing from Captain Phillips in its opening weekend.

The Sandra Bullock/George Clooney astronaut flick dropped just 21 percent in its second week, earning $44.2 million to claim No. 1 once again. Captain Phillips, based on a true story and starring Tom Hanks as the titular skipper, earned $26 million in its debut.

New fall shows: Vote for your favorites

Coming in at No. 3 was the animated sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, with $14.2  million.

The star-studded action movie Machete Kills bombed, with a meager $3.8 million and a fourth-place finish.

Runner Runner and Prisoners each fell two spots, to No. 5 and No. 6, with $3.7 million and $3.6 million, respectively. Insidious Chapter 2, meanwhile, notched up a space to No. 7 with $2.65 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Rush (No. 8, $2.36 million), Don Jon (No. 9, $2.34 million) and Baggage Claim (No. 10, $2.1 million).
