The Coen Brothers Aren't Doing a Netflix Show After All

Last year the Coen Brothers announced they were writing and directing their first-ever TV show -- a Western anthology for Netflix called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs -- with the archly enthusiastic statement "We are streaming motherf---ers!" Now, it turns out they're still streaming, but doing less of it.

Variety reports that The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has evolved from an anthology series into an anthology movie. Instead of six episodes, it will be a single feature broken up into a chaptered anthology structure. It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, which starts late next month.

"We've always loved anthology movies, especially those films made in Italy in the Sixties which set side-by-side the work of different directors on a common theme," the Coens said in a statement obtained by Variety. "Having written an anthology of Western stories we attempted to do the same, hoping to enlist the best directors working today. It was our great fortune that they both agreed to participate."

O Brother, Where Art Thou?'s Tim Blake Nelson will star as Buster Scruggs. The rest of the series cast was set to include James Franco, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson, Zoe Kazan and Tyne Daly, but we'll see who makes it into the finished product as it gets broken up to fit feature length.
