Scandal Shocker: The Mole Speaks Out on What's Next!

[Warning: This story contains major spoilers from Thursday's penultimate episode of Scandal. Read at your own risk!]

Are you still screaming at your television over the unmasking of the mole? Understandable!

Thursday's Scandal shocked viewers with the long-awaited reveal of the identity of the mole after OPA — Huck (Guillermo Diaz) in particular — forced Charlie (George Newbern) to give up the information. Unfortunately, Charlie was not, in fact, behind the stolen Citron card, which went missing from Olivia's (Kerry Washington) safe after Charlie visited the office. Instead, it was David Rosen (Josh Malina) who stole the card to presumably blow the election-rigging scandal wide open.

Scandal Scoop: Who is the mole?!

That's right, David has been working for the mole, who is none other than the presumed-dead Billy Chambers (Matt Letscher)! We knew he wasn't dead! Sally Langston's (Kate Burton) former vice presidential chief of staff is still alive and kicking. Not surprisingly, he's working with Charlie, who was initially sent to kill him, and David, who tried the Defiance case. What does this all mean?! TVGuide.com caught up with Letscher over e-mail to get the scoop, so pick your jaw up off the floor and read on:

Billy is alive! How surprised were you to find out he's the mole?
Matt Letscher: Not to quibble, but he's really in league with the mole, isn't he? Maybe he and David make for a two-headed mole. Regardless, I was very surprised to find out he was alive, yet not totally shocked.  If only because I knew that we hadn't seen him being killed, and a body never surfaced and, in Shondaland, that means you still got a shot to show up somehow, somewhere. But it definitely felt like I won the lottery.

Are we going to find out what happened to him during all these months?
Letscher: Most of it, yes. Suffice to say, the wheels have been turning on this caper for some time.

What can you tell us about Billy's motivations as the mole? Is it to get back in Sally's good graces or is he working with her?
Letscher: I can tell you that he is an absolutist, which maybe made politics a poor career choice for him. When he sees something he views as fundamentally immoral taking place, it needs to be exposed and the guilty parties burned at the stake.

He's been working with Charlie. What can you tell us about their relationship?
Letscher: Mutually beneficial, but Charlie is definitely coloring outside the lines here.

How did he come to work with David?
Letscher: In order for this plan to work, Billy has to suss out the needs and weaknesses of the participants and, at this point David has many of both. Everybody has skin in the game, but perhaps no one more than David.

What does he want to do with the Citron card? What kind of damage does he want to do to the President (Tony Goldwyn)?
Letscher: He wants the same things he wanted in Season 1 with regard to the President, and the President's transgressions have multiplied to the degree that justice must be served. But, in Billy's mind, that goes for a lot of other folks, too. Also, Billy is very aware of his own guilt, of what he's become, and I believe he views this as his last shot at a kind of moral redemption. Crazy as that sounds.

How will he go up against OPA in the finale?
Letscher: Very carefully. Ha!

Will he and Quinn (Katie Lowes) come face-to-face considering he killed her boyfriend Gideon (Brendan Hines)?
Letscher: That would be a very difficult and tense encounter, wouldn't it?

What's going to surprise us about the season finale?
Letscher: Maybe the fact that, once again, all the way to the very end, things are not what they seem. There is always another layer. The show's ability to sustain that essential element is a kind of witchcraft.
