The animated comedy, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, took in an estimated $40 million, the biggest opening weekend of any movie so far this year. Also in its first weekend in theaters, Scream 4 scared up $19.2 million to earn second place for the weekend.
Hop fell to third place with $11.1 million after two weeks at No. 1. Soul Surfer held onto the fourth spot, drawing another 7.4 million.

Hanna grossed $7.3 million to rank fifth for the weekend. Arthurcame in at No. 6 with a second-week haul of $6.9 million, and Insidious followed in seventh place, earning $6.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Source Code (No. 8, $6.3 million), The Conspirator (No. 9, $3.9 million) and Your Highness (No. 10, $3.8 million).
