VIDEO: John Oliver Shines As New The Daily Show Host

It was business as usual at The Daily ShowMonday night with one crucial difference: Jon Stewart was nowhere to be seen. With the host on hiatus to direct a film, John Oliver, the show's Senior British Correspondent since 2006, made his debut as The Daily Show's temporary summer host.

"Let's just all acknowledge for a moment that this is weird," Oliver said, as he began his three-month tenure. The nervous comedian then admitted that Stewart had tried to ease his anxieties by explaining that "no big new stories ever break out over the summer," only to have the NSA controversy break immediately after Stewart signed off last week.
Oliver addressed the scandal in a hilarious new segment titled "Good News! You're Not Paranoid." "We now know that the government has been actively collecting an unprecented amount of information on that small, select group of us who either make phone calls or use the internet," Oliver said. "I've got to say: I'll bet the Amish are feeling pretty f---ing smug right now. Or they would be feeling that way if they had any idea that this story was happening."

The Daily Show then offered some self-deprecating wit, with the series' other correspondents taking turns complaining about "an immigrant" getting the hosting gig over them. "I've only been here for six minutes!" Oliver pleaded, only to learn that his poor hosting skills have already gone viral. "Buzzfeed just posted The 27 Worst Moments of John Oliver's First Six Minutes," special correspondent Aasif Mandvi informed Oliver.
