Grey's Anatomy: Should April Terminate Her Pregnancy?

Plus: How's Meredith handling being alone?

Things are not looking good for Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) on Grey's Anatomy.

At the end of Thursday's episode, it's all but a foregone conclusion that the newlyweds are about to receive the news they've been dreading: that their unborn baby has a fatal disease. How did they get to this point? Let's recap the episode:

With Derek (Patrick Dempsey) off in D.C., Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is feeling lonely, and Alex (Justin Chambers) gets his first test as her new Person when she texts him in what appears to be the middle of the night to see if he's busy. As it turns out, yes - he and Jo (Camilla Luddington) are having sex - very enthusiastically, judging by the expression on Arizona's (Jessica Capshaw) face in the next room. (Apparently Meredith and Cristina, somewhat disturbingly, had a "pause" rule if the other texted mid-coitus.)

At the hospital the next day, Meredith and Jo deal with a liver sarcoma patient who tells them the story of how her and her husband met (adorably), indicating to all of us longtime Grey's watchers that she's probably doomed.

Meanwhile, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) is dealing with a tumor of her own, Dr. Hermann's (Geena Davis), and Arizona is giving April an ultrasound to determine which type of the disease their baby has. Jackson tells April he wants to terminate the pregnancy if the baby has Type II (the bad, potentially fatal type), while April wants to take the pregnancy to term regardless. Before they can come to a conclusion, April's mom returns and whisks her off to church.

As Meredith, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Jo are working on the liver tumor, they discover that, yeah, it's worse than they thought - a "monster" tumor, in the words of Meredith, and one that's spread to several other organs. They bring in Maggie (Kelly McCreary) to help, and eventually Meredith comes up with a plan to create a replica of the tumor using the 3-D printer. And hey, no Cristina to fight over it with this time!

Elsewhere, Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) meet a representative from a tech company who's hoping to "climb into bed" with their "sexy" veterans project - but as it turns out, she really just wants to climb into bed with Callie. We discover this when Callie and Owen attempt to have a joint "single and ready to mingle" night at the bar, where, lo and behold, horny tech lady is drinking alone. After Callie tries to set her up with Owen and finds out that the flirtation was actually directed towards her, she gets flustered and runs out of the bar - but not before turning down tech lady's offer of a no-strings-attached one-night stand.

While Amelia's (kind of hilariously) explaining to a confused/skeptical group about how they're going to approach Dr. Hermann's tumor, Hermann has been chasing the most difficult/interesting cases around the country for the "crash course" she's going to give Arizona in fetal surgery. Later, Hermann shows Amelia the stack of index cards of "babies who will die" if Amelia can't save her. So, you know, no pressure there.

At April and Jackson's house, as they're preparing for the most uncomfortable dinner ever, April's mom sticks her nose in where it doesn't belong and says she doesn't think Jackson and April should even get the test results. An argument between her and Jackson escalates into a shouting match until April puts an angry, tearful stop to it.

In what looks like the least fun sleepover ever, the two tumor teams are pulling an all-nighter at the hospital, with Meredith, Maggie and Bailey monitoring the 10-hour printer session and Amelia marinating on her latest project. But the truth is, incapable-of-being-alone Meredith is really just staying because she doesn't want to go home and sleep alone. (In a convenient bit of dialogue, Meredith explains that Grey Sloan has 24-hour "day care, night care, whatever." So that's where Bailey and Zola have been this entire season!) Bailey says Ben snores, Amelia misses her fiancé, and we get some real insight into Maggie, who confesses that she's physically incapable of sleeping with someone next to her - to the extent that she ended a relationship because of it. Meredith breaks the ice by pondering whether she should print out a 3-D copy of Derek to sleep with.

Mega Buzz: Who's having an "emotional affair" on Grey's Anatomy?

Once the tumor printed out, Alex and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) join the group to figure out how they can save the liver woman's life. After much diagramming, and a nailbiter of surgery, they remove the gargantuan tumor. And, in doing so, Stephanie has a light bulb moment about Amelia's approach to Dr. Hermann's case - and it couldn't come at a better time, just when Amelia is worried that the other residents think she's literally crazy for wanting to operate on Dr. H.

After their failed outing at the bar, Callie's feeling a little down about her MIA libido, and she and Owen commiserate about how neither one of them is really ready to date again right now - and will they ever be? Owen follows this up with a big ol' serving of masochism when he revisits his and Cristina's special air shaft in the hospital. Also feeling a little self-pitying is Meredith. With only her 3D tumor to spoon (gross?), she FaceTimes Maggie to have a little company before she goes to sleep.

And finally, Jackson and April have their appointment to learn the test results. Though we don't get to hear the specific diagnosis before the credits start rolling, the expression on Arizona's face (coupled with the fact that she's bringing in "the big guns," a.k.a. Dr. Hermann) is a dead giveaway that it's not good news.

What did you think? Should Jackson and April terminate the pregnancy? Is Amelia biting off more than she can chew with Dr. Hermann's tumor? And will Meredith ever learn to sleep on her own? Sound off in the comments!

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
