Gotham Exclusive: Hugo Strange Turns Galavan Into "Azrael"

Gotham's Hugo Strange (BD Wong) has figured out a way to control his reanimated villains: give each of them a new origin story.

The first villain to successfully get on board with the plan is Theo Galavan (James Frain), who is subdued from his murderous state of rage when Hugo Strange dubs him "Azrael." That name should sound familiar to comic book fans because Azrael is the name passed down to the champions of the Sacred Order of St. Dumas. Members of the Sacred Order made their first appearance on Gotham earlier this season, when Galavan tried to resurrect the Order to help him take over the city. He also used them to try and exact revenge against the Waynes for destroying the Dumas family name decades before. Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) disrupted that plan, but now thanks to Hugo Strange, Galavan is getting a second chance at restoring the Dumas family name.

Gotham: The truth shall set Penguin free

At least that's what Hugo manages to convince Galavan -- now Azrael -- is his purpose. But now, instead of defending the honor of the Sacred Order of St. Dumas', Galavan's murderous rage is being bent to the will of the head of Arkham Asylum, and Jim Gordon is at the top of Hugo's hit list.

If Hugo can develop similar new origin stories for the other villains he has on ice -- Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), Jerome (Cameron Monaghan) and whoever else -- will anyone be able to stop him?
