Elementaryfinally unmasked Moriarty, but it probably wasn't who you were expecting.

After reuniting with Irene Alder (Natalie Dormer), whom Moriarty had apparently kept captive, Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) begins to deduce that his former lover might be working with Moriarty, but sadly he was mistaken.

Irene actually is Moriarty — an intriguing twist on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work by mashing up Sherlock's greatest foe with his only love — who decided to study Sherlock after he got in the way of some of her assassination plans. When she figured out he was actually inferior to her, she let him live, which was galvanized by his spiral into addiction. But when he recovered in New York, she decided to seek him out — though really, she's in NYC to kick off a political scandal from which she'd reap a major profit.

Elementary Postmortem: Natalie Dormer on the Irene Adler reveal and finale twist

Instead of letting her win, as she dared him to do, Sherlock fakes an overdose to draw her to his hospital room where the police are waiting to arrest her. It appears that Sherlock's nemesis has finally been defeated, but it's hard to deny the chemistry between Moriarty and Sherlock, so here's hoping Holmes' greatest foe will find her way out of this, and maybe make an appearance when Holmes and Watson (Lucy Liu) head to London for the Season 2 premiere.
