I have no doubt that police officers and their spouses suffer from substance-abuse issues at a high rate along with the rest of the population, but it seems like everyone's copping on Season 3 of TNT's crime drama. Officer John Cooper's now hooked on prescription painkillers, and the charismatic Michael Cudlitz deserves a fresher subplot than this one, which feels like a shoddily reconstructed House. It only gets worse next week, when he's partnered with the freshly detoxed alcoholic Officer Billy Dewey (C. Thomas Howell). Meanwhile, Detective Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) just found out his ex-druggie wife (Emily Bergl, who's been pulling double duty on Desperate Housewives) is pregnant.
What's next — will Detective Russell Clarke (Tom Everett Scott) start smoking crack to chase away the memories of the shooting that's relegated him to a desk job? Southland had better come up with some new stories before viewers start to "just say no."
Do you think Southland should kick itsaddiction-plotline habit?
