Box Office: Oz Sets a Record for 2013

Oz The Great and Powerful set a record for 2013 in its opening weekend, netting $80.2 million and soaring to a No. 1 position by a landslide. It's the strongest debut for a movie since The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opened with $84 million back in December, Box Office Mojo reports.

The film, which stars James Franco as the titular wizard and Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams as three witches, finished more than $70 million ahead of its nearest competitor, Jack the Giant Slayer, which dropped off more than 63 percent from its opening weekend and earned $10 million in its second week.

In third place was the comedy Identity Thief, which earned $6.3 million. Rounding out the top five were Dead Man Down, which had an abysmal debut with $5.35 million and Snitch, which closed out with $5.1 million.

Raunchy comedy 21 and Over finished sixth with $5 million and the Nicholas Sparks' adaptation Safe Haven followed with $3.8 million.

Silver Linings Playbook held steady in its 17th week in theaters, finishing in eighth place with $3.7 million.

Coming in ninth and 10th place for the weekend were Escape From Planet Earth ($3.2 million) and The Last Exorcism Part II ($3.1 million).
