A 1982 portrait of American life is sketched in a cinéma-vérité study of Muncie, Ind., which was deemed a 'typical' town in books by sociologists Robert and Helen Lynd in the 1920s and '30s. Peter Davis's documentary includes the story of a mayoral race, a high-school basketball game, a fundamentalist group, a struggling family business and a second marriage for two divorced people.
