Watercooler: American Idle

How do we say this delicately? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Seriously, has there ever been a less captivating American Idol than Carole King night? Nothing against King, one of our nation's greatest musical contributors, but her folksy, classics just don't lend themselves to the kind of lively TV we've come to expect from the season of Idol.

And let's talk about dated! Every week, one of the judges says something about "staying relevant" and "doing you," then they go and saddle the Top Six with songs from nearly 20 years before any of them were even zygotes. It's like having the foodies on Top Chefcook with nothing but lard, Coke Clear and Quisp. Granted, a few of the finalists did well with what they were working with, but overall, the 90 minutes dragged longer than one of Jacob Lusk's high notes — and felt just as forced.

Do you agree? Or was it good to be Carole King last night?
