This New Walking Dead Trailer Promises a "Leadership Clash"

Rick Grimes better watch out

Before Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohn leave The Walking Dead in Season 9, Rick and Maggie will fight. Their dispute over what to do with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) began in the Season 8 finale, and it will reach a breaking point in Season 9, with Daryl (Norman Reedus) siding with Maggie and Michonne (Danai Gurira) siding with Rick. This new teaser trailer (which, to be fair, is made up of previously-seen footage) puts that conflict front-and-center.

"You told me that you'd be the one following me, but you didn't," Maggie tells Rick, calling back to something he said in Season 6. "That changes now." Elsewhere, Rick and Daryl look ready to come to blows once again.

Don't get too worked up about a civil war, though. "It's not all-out grown men fighting each other in a pit with two sticks or whatever," Danai Gurira said at Comic-Con. "It's more fraught because it's people who love each other and it's people who want to be on the same page, but really, really aren't. It's family. It's a family feud, which is actually much in some ways scarier, and it feels much more volatile."

Prepare for this warfare to be psychological.

The Walking Dead Season 9 premieres Sunday, Oct. 7 at 9/8c on AMC.
