Syfy to Reimagine Beowulf as a TV Series

Syfy wants to go epic, starting with the Old English poem Beowulf.
The network is teaming with writer Matt Greenberg (who gave us the psyhological horror film 1408) to adapt the legendary tale for television, Entertainment Weekly reports. For those who've never read (or may have forgotten) the poem, Beowulf is the name of a 5th-century Scandinavian hero who comes to the aid of King Hrogar, whose hall has been attacked by a creature known as Grendel. Spoiler alert! Beowulf slays Grendel, but then the monster's mom gets into the action.

Beowulf is often cited as one of the most important works in Anglo-Saxon literature, having been written between the 8th and 11th century. Previous adaptations include the CG-animated film of the same name by Robert Zemeckis in 2007, Gerard Butler's 2005 Beowulf & Grendel and Syfy's own TV movie Grendel.
