Supergirl Adds 5 New Characters in Season 2—What's It Mean for Cat Grant?

Supergirl continues to add to its super-good-looking ranks in Season 2. According to TV Line, the series, which is making the jump to The CW in Season 2, will be adding five new major characters in addition to casting the heretofore unseen Man of Steel.

Two of the roles the series is attempting to cast--Lena Luthor, the younger sister of Lex Luthor, and a man by the name of Nick Farrow--will be series regulars. Described as being sexy and smart because this is TV, Lena comes to National City with the intent of escaping her balder older brother, best known in the comics universe and beyond for being Superman's arch-nemesis.

Nick, meanwhile, is said to be a "brash leading man" who will make life difficult for Kara (Melissa Benoist) at CatCo. He's the son of a famous reporter and is looking to step out of the shadows, but it remains to be seen whether or not he'll be able to change his self-indulgent ways for the better.

The remaining three roles will be recurring characters. There's a woman known as the Doctor, which we're pretty sure has nothing to do with a TARDIS. She's the leader of Project Cadmus and uses her skills to implant alien technology into prisoners, which sounds kind of rude, to be honest. Snapper Carr, which is a pretty great name, is a seasoned journalist hand-picked by Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) to revamp CatCo's newsroom.

And finally, there's Maggie, a lesbian detective inspired by comic book character Maggie Sawyer. She works for the Science Police, a new team that deals with metahumans and alien threats, and would probably fit right in with Barry and Cisco and the rest of Team Flash when the two shows inevitably cross over again.

Not only will the series' move from CBS to corporate sibling The CW--and the decision to move production from Los Angeles to Vancouver--make crossovers between the DC Comics' series easier to facilitate, but it also raises the question of whether or not we're in for a major shake-up in Season 2. Most importantly: Does this casting news mean what we think it could mean--that some of our favorite Season 1 characters, specifically Calista Flockhart's Cat Grant, will not be back?

When news of the show's renewal broke in April, it was reported that Flockhart, easily the biggest name attached to the superhero drama, would remain with the series in Season 2. But in the wake of the news that the show is adding two new regulars, as well as a character who's going to be running CatCo's newsroom, is it possible that Flockhart won't be back--or at the very least, will only be recurring? It's definitely something to consider, so now may be a good time to stock up on tissues, just in case.

UPDATE: Warner Bros., which produces the series, told TVGuide.com it has no comment regarding Flockhart's future on Supergirl at this time.
