"You just don't see it happening to you."

That's how Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis describes Scientology in the new documentary Going Clear.

In this trailer for the upcoming HBO project, former followers like Haggis as well as Chicago P.D. star Jason Beghe speak out candidly about the allure, and, eventually, what they believe to be the confines of the religion, which Haggis blatantly likens to a "cult" in voiceover.

Stars who've left Scientology

After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival last month, the film already has vocal opponents, such as longtime scientologist and actor Danny Masterson, who discussed the film in an interview withPaper magazine. "I heard about that documentary; the documentary where they interviewed eight people who hate Scientology. Should be pretty interesting," he said. "I wonder if Sundance would allow a documentary of, like, eight people who hate Judaism. But you know, my religion's fair game, I guess, 'cause it's new."
