The truth behind Operation Remington was finally revealed during Scandal's midseason finale, but it just wasn't quite what we were expecting.

With Mama Pope (Khandi Alexander) on a flight to Hong Kong, OPA takes the time to actually do a background check on her to find out her supposed crimes. However, she only sold secrets to the highest bidder, which makes Olivia (Kerry Washington) wonder why her mom would be on a plane carrying a bomb. Light bulb! There was no bomb.

Scandal: Is there more to Huck and Quinn's relationship?

It turns out, when Rowan (Joe Morton) pulled his wife off the plane, she convinced him there was a bomb on board, so he had Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) shoot the plane down. But Rowan was tricked. There was never any bomb, which is why he locked Maya up for over 20 years and ultimately faked her death. But Olivia and the team discover the truth too late, and the woman who caused Rowan and Fitz to kill more than 300 innocent civilians is in the wind. Mama Pope does call her daughter, however, to say they'll be seeing each other soon before dumping the burner phone in a trash can outside of the White House. Dun. Dun. Dunnnn. She's back in D.C.!

After spending the whole first half of the third season building up to this big reveal, the truth behind Remington felt like a bit of a cheat. So Fitz was forced to shoot down a bunch of civilians all because Rowan was tricked? All those episodes spent agonizing over Fitz killing the mother of his mistress seem all for naught now. But hopefully this new mystery launching into the back half of the season will be much more interesting now that David Rosen (Josh Malina) has proof that Sally (Kate Burton), with the help of Cyrus (Jeff Perry), covered up the murder of Daniel Douglas (Jack Coleman).

Scandal recruits The Closer's Jon Tenney as a new love tnterest

Plus: Quinn (Katie Lowes) is no longer a Gladiator, but at least her new boss at B613 isn't Rowan! Jake (Scott Foley) has taken the big gig at Wonderland, which surely Rowan will not be too happy about.
