Scandal's Edison vs. Jake! Who's Better for Olivia?

It's no secret that just about every Scandal fan hated Edison. Olivia's polarizing former love interest certainly made fans angry. After his proposal was shot down as many times as Olivia (Kerry Washington) actually dumped him, Edison (Norm Lewis) just couldn't take the hint, sticking around in hopes Olivia would somehow magically take him back once again. Mostly, fans were angry that Edison was a road block between Olivia and her true love, Fitz (Tony Goldwyn). But that was the point!

Olivia's polarizing former love interest certainly made fans angry. Mostly, fans were angry that Edison was a road block between Olivia and her true love, Fitz (Tony Goldwyn). But that was the point!

Scandal Scoop: Is Billy Chambers really dead?

"You weren't supposed to be rooting for Edison," executive producer Shonda Rhimes says. "If you were rooting for Edison, I would've been very surprised."

Now, Olivia may have found a new love in Jake Ballard, played by Felicity and Grey's Anatomy alum Scott Foley — The popular star is a favorite with fans, who may now have switched their romantic allegiance from Fitz to Jake. Even after it was revealed that Jake was spying on Olivia for the President, it seemed like there was still a sect of fans who were more than happy to get on board with this Jake guy. After all, that's far better than being a creeper who spies on Olivia in her apartment for fun.

But is Jake really the right man for her? Even if he acts all noble by turning off the camera when Olivia changes, he's still spying on her, people! Maybe we were wrong all along, and Edison really was the better choice.

"Edison is the guy you're supposed to want on paper," Rhimes says. "He has every single quality of a guy you should want. He's a United States senator, he's handsome, he's rich, he loves Liv, he wants to get married and settle down. Except he's not the guy that she wants. Period. That was the goal for him. He's a great guy for someone else."

Does that mean poor Liv will always be forced to watch her one true love run the country from afar? "Olivia Pope has bad taste in men," Rhimes says with a laugh. "She has a problem there, and that's her flaw. I love when Olivia says to Edison, 'I want extraordinary, difficult, life-changing love,' and he looks at her, and he's like, 'Love is not supposed to hurt.' Liv doesn't know that yet."

Do you hope Jake may be the one to show her that love doesn't hurt? Or are you still rooting for Olivia to end up with Fitz? Or, just maybe, you think she should get back together with Edison? Hit the comments!

Scandal airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
