American Crime Story Won't Focus on Hurricane Katrina After All; Plus, Details on Fargo Season 4

The future of FX's award-winning American Crime Story has always felt like a bit of a moving target, but it seems like American Crime Stor: Katrina has officially missed the mark.

FX President John Landgraf told reporters today at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that the Katrina season of American Crime Story was all but dead at the network. "Katrina is not still in the mix," he said when asked about the status of the long-delayed series.

Though American Crime Story: Katrina, a season focusing on Sheri Fink's novel Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital, was announced in 2017, it hit several stumbling blocks during the development process. When production was pushed back in June of 2017, Landgraf cited a "creative pivot" as the reason for the delay. Now, it seems FX is no longer interested in another pivot.

American Crime Story is still a priority for FX, and Landgraf said he is confident that there are many more seasons to come for the successful series.

"We have three or four ideas in active development, where we've sort of acquired rights, we've done a fair amount of research, we've got writers working on them," Landgraf said. "And I couldn't tell you which one of them is likely to be ready first, but my sense is the likelihood is they'll all be produced over time. So I think there are many more cycles of ACS to come and more cycles of American Horror Story, too."

It sounds like even though Ryan Murphy is heading to Netflix, his FX properties are still chugging along -- all but Feud, that is; Landgraf confirmed the anthology series is on permanent hiatus as Murphy has no ideas for the next cycle of Feud right now.

Landgraf also offered an update on Fargo Season 4, which goes into production this winter. The executive said that FX will continue to renew the anthology series as long as series creator Noah Hawley has the creative juice to keep making it. "It's really up to Noah, as long as he can come up with fantastic ideas," Landgraf said. "We'll make [the show] forever if he keeps coming up with great ideas. He has to be inspired. I'm inspired by the fourth season idea as much as by any of the other three."

Landgraf also confirmed that acclaimed comedyAtlanta, which stars Donald Glover, will not be back for Season 3 by the summer due to personal issues. "[Glover has] had personal things he's had to deal with, from injuries to other things I'd rather not say publicly that just have to do with not with his personal life but his extended family," Landgraf said. The writers' room is currently working on scripts for the upcoming season, but the show will not be able to go into production in time to be considered for the 2019 Emmy Awards this fall.

The FX boss also offered more explanation for another Donald Glover project -- the ill-fated animated Deadpool series. The FX boss blamed Marvel for not moving forward with the project. "His Deadpool animated series didn't work out because Marvel didn't want to make it. It didn't fit with what they wanted to do with Deadpool, and it's their brand."
