Roman Polanski granted bail, remains in jail

The Swiss Justice Ministry said Thursday it would not appeal a Swiss Criminal Court's decision to release Polanski on $4.5 million bail, provided he surrender his documents of identity, wear an electronic bracelet and not leave his home in Gstaad. The bail will be forfeited to the Swiss government should the 76-year-old director violate the terms of his release.Polanski's release from jail will be done quietly. "We don't want to show him off like an exotic animal," Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli told the AP.The ministry, however, said no decision has been made about whether the Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown director will be extradited to the United States, where authorities want to sentence Polanski for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.

Polanski's victim wants case dismissed

Polanski pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse and was sentenced to 90 days of psychiatric evaluation. He was released after 42 days, but fled the country in 1978 when the judge said he was going to send Polanski back to the rest of the sentence. Polanski was arrested on Sept. 26 as he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival.A decision about extradition will be made in the next couple of weeks, the ministry said.
