Mischa Barton says her hospitalization last month was not due to a nervous breakdown, but was rather the result of a "terrible" wisdom tooth surgery.
"Before the show [CW's The Beautiful Life: TBL] started, I was traveling abroad for contract stuff, and I went through a terrible surgery — a wisdom tooth surgery, all four removed. It was a nightmare," the actress told Time Out New York. "I've never had surgery before — it all went wrong and I had to have a second surgery and it almost delayed shooting because it was a nightmare to me, because I couldn't deal with the thought of not getting there on time."

Exacerbating matters was that Barton, who says she's still recovering from the surgery, couldn't take painkillers at work. The combination of the surgery, traveling and her new show took its toll on her, she said. Police removed Barton from her L.A. home July 15, and she was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Her rep would not comment on an Access Hollywood report that she was placed under psychiatric hold."I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once," Barton said. "I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while."

Still, while the situation was "pretty bad," Barton denied it was a full-on nervous breakdown and said it was blown out of proportion. "The funny thing is, if all this happened in New York, no one would care," Barton, who's filming Life in New York, said. "New York lets you be who you are, and people aren't as judgmental. I'm so glad to be back here."
