Netflix has released the first trailer for Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, the film that reunites the decorated director with Robert De Niro for the first time in decades.

De Niro stars as the titular Irishman, Frank Sheeran, a former union boss and alleged mafia hit man who claimed he'd taken down Jimmy Hoffa, portrayed in this film by Al Pacino. Sheeran was the subject of Charles Brandt's book I Heard You Paint Houses, adapted to the screen here by writer Steven Zaillian (Gangs of New York).

Everything to Know About Martin Scorsese's Netflix Movie, The Irishman

The Irishman also brings Joe Pesci out of pseudo-retirement, rounding out the Tinseltown trio that brought usRaging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino. And it stars another early Scorsese favorite in Harvey Keitel (Who's That Knocking at My Door, Mean Streets, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and Taxi Driver). In other words, this cast is nothing short of a dream team for Scorsese as he reinvigorates some of that vintage gangster movie appeal. Now that Netflix won't be excluded by the Academy, we can expect the streaming service to get some Oscar buzz around this pic.

The movie is also notable for the de-aging CGI used to make the leads look younger in the first half of the film.

Bobby Cannavale, Ray Romano, Stephen Graham, Jesse Plemons, and Anna Paquin also star.

The Irishman is set to open the New York Film Festival this September and will make its Netflix debut this fall.
