John Oliver Delivers A Must-Watch Lesson on Transgender Rights

BRB, we're still busy applauding

John Oliver is not slowing down, and after last week's historic Supreme Court ruling and a weekend of LGBT pride celebrations, he shined a bright (and quite frank) light on how the media and country still struggle to handle the concept of transgender.

Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner and shows like Transparent may be busy busting down barriers and making history, but "let's not get too complacent about how far we've come," Oliver said on Sunday night's Last Week Tonight.

In the nearly 17-minute segment, Oliver addressed the media's apparent inability to move past certain topics and inappropriate questions, and called out the hesitation to call people by their preferred pronoun.

"Call them whatever they want to be called. You can do it. We do it all the time," he said. "Think of it this way: David Evans woke up one day and said 'Everyone call me The Edge.' We all went 'Fine, The Edge, are we talking the noun or the verb?" Not to mention the slew of names we've called Sean Combs over the years.

Oliver broke down some of the basic details about transgender people -- all thanks to a weatherman who should probably just stick to talking about the weather - and offered a critical look at issues that are still present in the military and how harmful bathroom bills can be.

"This is a civil rights issue," he said, "if you are not willing to support transgender people for their own sake, at least do it for your own. We've been through this before. We know how this thing ends. If you take the anti-civil rights side and deny people access to something they're entitled to, history is not going to be kind to you."

Take a look:

If Laverne Cox's tweet is any indication, Oliver hit it out of the park (not that we're surprised).
