James Gandolfini is producing a comedy that may bring the Sopranos star back to HBO, Varietyreports.

The 48-year-old three-time Emmy winner is considering starring in the channel's planned adaptation of the French-Canadian series Taxi 22. It would be his first TV role since The Sopranos' cut to black in 2007.

Gandolfini would play a politically incorrect New York cab driver in the half-hour series. Dave Flebotte, most recently of Desperate Housewives and Sherri, is writing and co-executive producing the project.

Since The Sopranos, Gandolfini has produced the HBO documentary Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq and starred in Tony-winning play Gods of Carnage.
