New Game of Thrones Footage Reveals Tormund Is Back -- Or Is He?

The beard is intact, too

Ahead of Sunday's Academy Awards, HBO has released its newest teaser for the cable channel's upcoming slate, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, that includes a few quick glimpses at Game of Thrones Season 8.

The first is a sweeping shot of the wall as some ravens take flight above it -- so, not much to report there except that the lights are still on at this time -- and the second is of Drogon flitting past the unsullied army as they march to ... somewhere. We don't know. Their destination may or may not have anything to do with what wee see next, which is Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) cracking a rare smile from what looks to be a wintry Winterfell. Everyone around her seems scared, but Arya finds joy in dark places sometimes, so that's not abnormal at all.

Things really start to get interesting at the tail end of the clip, when we get a few flashes of the Night King thrusting his terrible ice spear before Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington) are shown wearing their usual expressions of consternation. Then, we see Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) come into frame, and aha! He's alive! Or is he?

Judging by the blue-free eyes of Viserion and the subsequent shot of the Wall still a-crumbling, some of these glimpses are probably recycled from Season 7. However, since other parts of this teaser are new, this shot of Tormund could be fresh, too, in which case... huzzah! The Tormund and Brienne of Tarth ship still sails!

Whatever his fate, it's clear the Game of Thrones creative crew wanted to remind us here that our hunky wildling friend's fate is still unknown at this time, after the Night King and his ice dragon laid waste to the wall -- and it's mission accomplished on that front.

HBO's Oscar night teaser also includes a first-glimpse that long-awaited Deadwood movie, along with footage from 2 Dope Queens, Ballers, Barryand Big Little Lies, to name a few.

Game of Thrones' final season premieres on HBO on Sunday, April 14 at 9/8c.
