Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel Pines will be back to explore the mysterious world of Gravity Falls for a second season. Disney Channel has renewed the hit animated series, created by young animator Alex Hirsch.
Gravity Falls — a mix of Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Lost and the animated feature Monster House, wrapped in a comedic, irreverent bow — features the voices of Hirsch, Jason Ritter, Kristen Schaal and Linda Cardellini. The show has also developed a fan base that dissects the show's growing mythology, as well as decodes secret messages planted throughout each episode.
A renewal comes as no surprise: So far in 2013, Gravity Falls is TV's top-rated animated series with kids 2-11 (2 million viewers), kids 6-11 (1.6 million) and tweens 9-14 (1.3 million).
Disney is also moving forward with its marketing plans for Gravity Falls, including a deal with the Subway sandwich chain. In August, Subway's "Fresh Fit for Kids Meals" will feature six different reusable Gravity Falls bags and a window decal or sticker featuring the show. The Gravity Falls page on DisneyChannel.com is also set to launch two new online games, "Attic Stuff Golf" and "PinesQuest."
"Gravity Falls is mystery, comedy and weird all rolled into one unique show," says Eric Coleman, senior vice president of original series at Disney Television Animation. "Alex Hirsch and his team have crafted a show with memorable characters, multi-layered stories and production values that are rarely seen in television animation."
In the next episode of Gravity Falls, "Gideon Rises," pint-sized huckster Li'l Gideon has swindled the Mystery Shack away, forcing Dipper, Mabel and Grunkle Stan to move in with dimwitted Soos and his grandmother. When Stan weighs whether he can still take care of his grandniece and grandnephew, Mabel and Dipper decide to take on Gideon. A first-look photo from the episode — which airs Friday, Aug. 2 at 8:30/7:30c — is above.
