Box Office: SpongeBob Overtakes American Sniper - How Did Mila Kunis' New Film Do?

American Sniper has finally met its match.

The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie: Sponge Out of Waterovertook Clint Eastwood's war drama at the box office, earning $56 million in its opening weekend, Box Office Mojo reports. That bumped American Sniper down a spot to second place, with $24.1 million in its seventh week.

The other two big-budget openings bombed, however. Jupiter Ascending had a modest debut, landing at No. 3 with $19 million. And the fantasy Seventh Son opened in fourth place with $7.1 million.

With $5.36 million, Paddington came in at No. 5 and just edged out Project Almanac, which took in $5.33 million in its second week.

The Imitation Gameheld steady at No. 7 with $4.9 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were The Wedding Ringer ($4.8 million), Black or White(No. 9, $4.5 million) and The Boy Next Door(No. 10, $4.1 million).
