Box Office: Man of Steel Leaps to No. 1

Man of Steel, the latest installment in the Superman franchise, soared past the competition at the box office this weekend, easily taking the No. 1 spot and setting a new record for June, according to Box Office Mojo.

Man of Steel, the latest installment in the Superman franchise, soared past the competition at the box office this weekend, easily taking the No. 1 spot and setting a new record for June, according to Box Office Mojo.

Through Sunday, Man of Steel (which premiered Thursday night in several markets) hauled in a whopping $125.1 million, making it the second-highest film opening of 2013 behind Iron Man 3. It also surpassed Toy Story 3 to earn the best opening ever for a film in June.

Coming in second place was the apocalypse comedy This Is the End, which earned $20.5 million in its opening weekend. Now You See Me held steady at No. 3 with $10.3 million.

Fast & Furious 6 raked in $9.4 million for a fourth-place finish, while last week's number one film, The Purge, had about a 75 percent drop-off from its first week, landing at No.  5 with $8.2 million.

The Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn comedy The Internship earned $7 million, finishing in sixth place, and cartoon Epic fell to seventh place with $6 million.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Star Trek Into Darkness (No. 8, $5.66 million), After Earth (No. 9, $3.75 million) and Iron Man 3 (No. 10, $2.9 million).
