First ghosts, then Nazis and aliens and now... witches?

The third season of American Horror Storywill be subtitled Coven, executive producer Ryan Murphy announced at Friday's PaleyFest panel for the FX series, which strongly seems to indicate — as many fans have speculated — that the third season will revolve around witches.

Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters return for American Horror Story Season 3

While Murphy declined to elaborate further on what the subtitle actually means, he noted that the show would actually shoot in New Orleans, as well as other locations. "The fun thing is researching what are the really haunted places in America, and we have a couple doozy locales," he said and added that like previous seasons, the upcoming season would include several horrific topics.

Also joining the cast on the stage Friday night was special guest star Kathy Bates, who was announced as one of the stars in the upcoming season. "You know I love a good Oscar winner," Murphy said of Bates joining the cast. He also said that he pitched her a "cuckoo-for-Cocoa-Puffs character" who is reported to be the best friend-turned-enemy of Jessica Lange's character. "I wanted to see a lot of scenes with Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates going at it, so that's what you're going to see," Murphy added.

Earlier this year, Murphy had teased that the third season would be more historical in nature and may deal in horror romance. He also noted that it would be lighter in nature than the previous two seasons, calling Lange's new character a "glamour cat."

"I don't know what a glamour cat is, but I am excited," Lange said Friday of her role in Season 3.

Also returning for Season 3 are Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe and Frances Conroy, who were all part of Friday's panel. Additionally, Season 1 star Taissa Farmiga has also joined the cast.

During the hour, Murphy also said that he has plenty of ideas for seasons to come and that he could see 10 years' worth of stories — and maybe even a spin-off. "I have been talking to John [Landgraf] about doing a companion piece to American Horror Story," Murphy said coyly.
