AMC Resurrects The Killing for a Third Season

The Killing cannot be killed. AMC has resurrected the crime drama for a third season, which begins shooting next month.

Series stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinneman are the only cast members listed as returning for Season 3. The new season will pick up a year after their characters (finally) solved the Rosie Larsen murder case, at which point Det. Sarah Linden (Enos) is no longer a detective. However, she must return to her old life when Det. Stephen Holder's (Kinneman) search for a runaway girl leads to a discovery of a string of gruesome murders connected to a previous murder investigation led by Linden.

"The Killing from day one has been a truly original take on the crime drama. Veena Sud and the rest of the talented creative team are hard at work shaping the lives of Linden and Holder, portrayed by the terrific Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman," AMC's president, Charlie Collier, said in a statement. "We're so pleased to welcome back The Killing for another season."

David Madden, President of Fox TV Studios which produces the show,  added: "We have always believed in The Killing and remain extremely proud of it, which is why we all worked so hard to find a scenario that could give it new life."

The Killing's renewal comes as somewhat of a surprise after it was originally canceled by AMC back in July. However, rumors began to spread that the series might return on Netflix, DirecTV or AMC a month later, and casting calls for a slew of new series regular roles were posted last week. After drawing an impressive average of 2.2 million viewers a week during Season 1, the first season finale angered viewers when the murder of teenager Rosie Larsen was left unsolved. The show's creative team defended the decision to extend the mystery into Season 2, but the show returned to lower ratings the following year.

Both AMC and Fox clearly want to put the Who Killed Rosie Larsen? fiasco firmly in the past, with the Season 3 press release promising that the new case will be solved over the course of the next 12 episodes. "I couldn't be happier to know that I will be returning to work with AMC, FTVS and Mireille and Joel on what is and has always been a passion project for me," series showrunner Veena Sud said. "To the fans that have supported the series, thank you for doing so. My team and I will work hard to deliver the best story that we can for season three."
