Encouraged to pursue an acting career by Richard Burton during a chance meeting on a flight from Mexico.
First acting job was a 1974 Malibu beach cheapie titled Sizzle Beach, U.S.A., not (as usually reported) 1983's The Big Chill, where his scenes were left on the cutting-room floor.
Directed 1997's The Postman, which won five Golden Raspberry Awards (aka Razzies) including Worst Picture.
The role of the President in Air Force One was written specifically for him, but he turned it down and the part went to Harrison Ford; also turned down the role of Bill in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1.
Received a star on the Walk of Fame in August 2003.
Formed the country-rock band Kevin Costner & Modern West and released the band's debut album, Untold Truths, in November 2008.
