CBS tried to compete with NBC's`Today' with this hybrid of news and variety, which went through many format changes and hosts during its desperate run. Initially hosted by Walter Cronkite (awkwardly teamed with a lion puppet named Charlemane), the show tried to blend comedy, music and news, with little success. It did, however, showcase future stars Johnny Carson (a substitute host in the winter of 1954) and Dick Van Dyke (host from 1955 to '56). Also known, in 1956, as `Good Morning.'
