The classic sitcom set at New York's Sunshine Cab Co. won three straight Emmys as Outstanding Comedy Series and had one of the all-time great ensembles, including Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Andy Kaufman, Marilu Henner, Tony Danza and Jeff Conaway. The episodes (from the producers who had worked on `The Mary Tyler Moore Show,' `Bob Newhart' and other series from MTM Productions) could veer hilariously from the soulful to the sophisticated to the surreal. `Taxi' ran five seasons (and deserved 10).

  • 'Unorthodox' | TV Show Recaps | 1/16/2008
For all you bloggers who want L&O:SVU to go back to investigating sex crimes I think we can all agree that the rape of a young boy is going to qualify. Now since Olivia was the featured detective in last week's episode it was pretty obvious that we'd be treated to a little Elliot Stabler tonight. But lo and behold who is that dapper chap standing next to him? Well if my eyes don't deceive me I do believe it's our long lost conspiracy minded investigator Det. John Munch. Haven't seen too much of Richard Belzer since NBC sidelined him at the beginning of this season. NIce to have him backWonder what came first though? Did the Orthodox Jew storyline logically dictate Belzer's presence or did they figure: well we're committed to putting Richard in one episode this year so let's throw his religion into the mix? If that's what its going to take I guess we won't see Munch again until SVU starts investigating hate crimes or someone defaces a synagogue. Shame. They even dumped him ... read more
  • Just one more comment about ... | Matt Roush | 11/10/2006
Question: Just one more comment about the current lack of opening credits and theme songs: I was watching Numbers the other night, and Judd Hirsch's character sat down to watch late-night TV because "that's when the classics are on." As the scene faded, you heard the theme song from Taxi. I ask you, how are we going to get little jokes like that when today's shows have no recognizable tunes? Answer: And then there was the kicker on this week's How I Met Your Mother, in which Barney, aka "Swarley," was hounded out of the bar with the Cheers theme, while credits in the original Cheers typeface came on screen. Delicious. These themes and title credits are part of what we love and treasure most about TV's heritage ... read more
  • SPOILER ALERT | Today's News: Our Take | 2/13/2006
Only if you're Tony Danza, that is. The New York Post reports that the ex-Taxi driver's chatfest has been permanently muzzled, but his bosses "are afraid [he] will be so upset that he won't be able to go on with the live shows every morning." The rumored plan is that the execs will break the news to him next month over a two-week hiatus and 24 martinis. Okay, I made up the martini part. read more
  • SUNNY DAYS AHEAD | Today's News: Our Take | 11/17/2005
Danny DeVito is returning to series television for the first time since his days as boss of Taxi's Sunshine Cab Company with a regular gig on FX's It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. DeVito will appear in all 10 episodes of the show's second season (premiering in June), although he'll shoot all of his scenes within 10 to 15 days — roughly half of the show's overall production schedule. That noise you hear is Vincent D'Onofrio calling his agent. read more
