  • One of the nicer surprises ... | Matt Roush | 10/6/2008
Question: One of the nicer surprises over the summer was Swingtown on CBS. I know you weren't a huge fan of the show, and I agree with you that the series wasn't Emmy-caliber, but as a distraction from all of the Wipeouts, Japanese Games Shows and Greatest American Dogs, Swingtown did succeed in providing me with some kitschy, retro drama moments that fulfilled what TV sometimes means to do: entertain. I just got (prematurely) excited when I saw that Bravo had picked up Swingtown. Unfortunately, it was for the rebroadcasting of the original 13 episodes already shown on CBS. My questions are these: Has CBS officially canceled Swingtown? Will Bravo be producing any new episodes? And if the answers to the first two questions are a "yes" and a "no," are the actors/crew still under contract to return to the series should Showtime pick it up? Answer: The answer, to my knowledge, is a "no" and a "no." At the moment, the fate of Swingtown has not... read more
  • Swingtown Swinging to Bravo | Today's News: Our Take | 9/29/2008
Swingtown has a new town network to call home — sort of.Bravo has secured cable syndication rights to the critically acclaimed 13-episode drama. The CBS series, which chronicles partner-swapping couples in the sexually liberated 1970s, aired to modest ratings over the summer. The Eye has remained mum over the show's future, but the future's not looking bright as the deal is a "straight acquisition," a source tells THR, meaning Bravo, or any network, will not produce new eps.Bravo will begin airing Swingtown in the fall, along with Law & Order: Criminal Intent and The West Wing. — Joyce Eng read more 1 Comment

  • I DVR'd Swingtown most of the ... | Matt Roush | 9/12/2008
Question: I DVR'd Swingtown most of the summer and caught up with it before summer's end. I was curious to see what all the hype was about (mostly it being too racy for network TV), and I am glad I watched. It was a great show, not too racy by any means. I can understand that maybe the subject of the show may have been too much for some, but it was quite intriguing to see how it played into these people's lives and emotions. Please tell me this show is going to be renewed for next year. TV very rarely gets a good drama, and I think this is one of the winners for this year. Answer: As far as I know, no decision has been made yet about the show's future. There have been reports that CBS/Paramount may shop the show around to cable outlets if CBS decides not to bring it back, and this is one of those rare cases in which I think that might actually make sense. With the freedom even basic cable enjoys (including what you see nowadays on risk-takers like FX and AMC), the show could... read more
  • "Take It to the Limit" | TV Show Recaps | 9/6/2008
So the big news tonight is that CBS just announced yesterday that Swingtown creator Mike Kelley inked a two-year development deal with the network. First up, he's developing a series for Showtime titled BiCoastal, about a man who has a wife in Los Angeles and who starts a relationship with a man in New York.So what does all this mean for Swingtown? Hard to say really. A pessimist might think Kelley's new gig means the end of Swingtown; an optimist might say that CBS isn't going to give the guy a deal and then cancel his show. I choose optimism: After all, couldn't Kelley's new relationship with Showtime mean his saucy swingers might be planning a move to cable? With its issues of sexual identity and freedom, it might make a natural partner for BiCoastal, no?As cliff-hangers go, tonight's season finale upped the ante in terms of sexual jeopardy. For possibly the first time on this show, the partner-swapping that occurred did so accompanied by significant emotional attachments.More... read more
