New Season in Review: Black-ish a Truly Modern Family

Comedies with an actual point of view are as rare as they are welcome — especially in a fall awash in mediocre new cookie-cutter romantic comedies. Even in a better season, ABC's provocative and very funny Black-ish (9:30/8:30c) would stand out for its broad and biting satire of an uneasily post racial society seen through a very modern-family prism. (It's also about time ABC scheduled a smart family comedy after its multiple-Emmy-winning champ Modern Family.)

The Motion Picture Editors Guild announced Wednesday via Twitter that the show's editors were going on strike after their request for negotiations on a union contract from CBS fell on deaf ears. The walkout lasted less than 12 hours, however, as producer Mark Burnett's company Island Post Productions agreed to talks with the group of about 24 post-production staff members, according to Deadline.

Premise: The show that launched a cultural (and ratings) phenomenon, and still arguably the class of the reality genre, what executive producer Mark Burnett prefers to call 'nonscripted drama.' It began with 16 people marooned on an island, working together to survive, but ultimately trying to 'outwit, outlast, outplay' the others for a $1 million grand prize. The group is whittled down as players are 'voted off' until only one remains.
