The final frontier is getting a little cleaner, crisper and closer, thanks to a remastered version of the Star Trek original series. The second season, now out in an eight-disc set, uses the original camera negatives, offering Trek fans a better look at the series than they've ever seen. Purists may bristle at the now computer-generated Enterprise (as compared to the obviously model-hanging-by-fish-wire version from when the show first aired), but the new visual effects have considerable appeal. Besides, there's no denying that computer animation has improved the look of sci-fi television and movies in the past 40 years — isn't it about time the granddaddy of all sci-fi series get a face lift?Special features include home movies from TOS company player Billy Blackburn, whose "treasure chest" offers rare glimpses behind the scenes of the seminal series. Star Trek vet George Takei and partner Brad Altman have set a wedding date, and they're beaming in a few former Trek costars for the occasion. The wedding party may look familiar: Takei tells People that the best man will be Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Chekov, while the matron of honor will be Nichelle Nichols — aka Lt. Uhura. Leonard Nimoy and his wife, meanwhile, have scored a spot on the guest list. (Is Captain Kirk being left out here? No surprise, if you follow the backstage tales....))Takei and Altman announced their engagement following the recent California ruling that made gay marriage legal. Star Trek Theme Composer Dead at 88 | Today's News: Our Take | 5/30/2008
Alexander "Sandy" Courage, composer of the theme to the Star Trek TV series, has died at age 88.He also composed music used in several episodes of the 1960s-era classic series.Courage once admitted he didn't quite know what he was getting into when he first composed the out-of-this-world theme."I have to confess to the world that I am not a science fiction fan," Courage said in 2000. "Never have been. I think it's just marvelous malarkey. So you write some, you hope, marvelous malarkey music that goes with it."And how about that whoosh sound when the Enterprise glides through the opening credits? That was Courage's own voice.Though he didn't compose the themes, he is also credited with creating music for The Waltons, Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. — J.R. Star Trek's George Takei: Gay Marriage Ruling Is "Simply Exquisite" | Today's News: Our Take | 5/19/2008
George Takei, aka Star Trek's original Sulu, is getting married. Following in the footsteps of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Takei announced on his Website that he and Brad Altman, his partner of 21 years, will be taking advantage of the new California state law allowing marriage for all couples, regardless of gender combo. Of his relationship and the opportunity to marry, Takei wrote, "We've shared the good times as well as struggled through the bad. [Brad] helped me care for my ailing mother who lived with us for the last years of her life. He is my love and I can't imagine life without him. Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage. We embrace it all heartily."Takei has not yet announced wedding details, but said that he and Altman are enjoying the "delicious dilemma" of planning.
