A wry Emmy-winning look at Manhattan's dating scene that was more about female friendship than sex, though there was plenty of that. It revolved around relationship columnist Carrie; sex-crazed Samantha; stolid lawyer Miranda; and marriage-hungry Charlotte. Based on Candace Bushnell's book, it was appointment TV especially for female viewers, who were taken with the clothes, the beaus and, most of all, the solidarity of its four lead women, whose disparate personalities were brilliantly etched.
  • Ask Matt | 7/7/2008
Q: Given the fact that you spent a good six years reviewing Sex and the City the TV series, I was curious to hear what your thoughts were on Sex and the City: The Movie. Seems to me, you ? and not necessarily the TV Guide movie critics ? would've been the ideal person to review it for the magazine. I seem to remember you thinking the series concluded in a mature, satisfying way and that you even recommended that future retiring series ? like Frasier, Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond ? ... read more
  • Sarah Jessica's Fired Up About a Fashion Faux Pas | Today's News: Our Take | 6/2/2008
By now, the image of Sarah Jessica Parker in her flowing, silver Nina Ricci gown at the Sex and the City premiere has circulated through just about every media outlet around the globe. Yet, despite how glam the actress looked, she's now suffering morning-after headaches about the dress's exclusivity, and feels duped by the fashion house that provided it for her big night. The dress, as it turns out, had been worn before(!). To make matters worse, the dress' designer, Olivier Theyskens, accompanied the frock for its first outing, on socialite Lauren Davis Santo Domingo, earlier in May. A photo of them together on a red carpet has been on Style.com.Parker told the New York Times that Theyskens assured her that the dress had not been worn before. While she noted that dress issues are not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, the relationship between Hollywood and fashion is serious business. "My affection for the dress hasn't changed," she explained, "but what they did was so... read more
  • Sex Director Speaks on Rumored Death in the City | Movie News | 5/6/2008
With the Sex and the City movie nearing its release day, rumors have been flying about whether there will be a death in the city — and in particular, the death of Mr. Big (Chris Noth).Director Michael Patrick King, however, laid that buzz to rest, more or less. "Kill Mr. Big? I would have been chased around the planet by women with torches," he joked to the AP. Yet, King did confide that he was looking to infuse some layers of melodrama into this film adaptation of the show — but perhaps not as much as a darker drama would call for."My ultimate target," King said, "was to make our 'girlfriends' — in other words, our audience — happy. And I don't think Mr. Big dying would make them happy." When pressed on the possibility of potential other deaths (Carrie gets hit by a cab after tripping in her Chloe gladiators? Charlotte suffocates in the steam room?), however, King denied the possibility. "It's a summer movie," he said. "Why would I want to kill anyone?" Do you... read more
  • HBO Looks to New Boss to Regain Buzz | Today's News: Our Take | 4/9/2008
HBO has hired a top TV talent agent to help find the pay cable network’s next big hit. Sue Naegle, most recently a partner and co-head of the television department at United Talent Agency, is taking the job as president of HBO Entertainment and will oversee all series programming and specials. As an agent, Naegle put together the deal for Six Feet Under (one of HBO’s most acclaimed hits) and also brought the network its upcoming Southern vampire series, True Blood. Naegle replaces longtime HBO exec Carolyn Strauss, who left the network. While HBO has remained enormously profitable, it hasn’t generated the kind of buzzworthy hits that viewers have come to expect from the network that brought them The Sopranos and Sex and the City. — Stephen Battaglio read more
  • The Joy of Sets: My Big Love for Sex and the City | DVD News and Reviews | 2/14/2008
Roses are played, violets are lameSex and the City, you are my dame.In the 10 years since HBO’s landmark ode to Manhattan’s Manolo Blahniked man-eaters debuted, I’ve quit drinking, smoking and shoe shopping (almost). I’m far from Amish, but still, Carrie and company would be so ashamed of me. The one indulgence I refuse to give up, however, is my raging addiction to TV’s ultimate four-play.And thanks to the gigantic, pink-velvet encased Sex and the City: The Complete Series, I can now count on endless DVD booty calls. In fact, just this past weekend, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and I all had a good old time. Twice. Yep, two seasons in three days. How I didn’t spontaneously develop a vagina is a mystery, considering the sheer amount of girl power popping off the screen. Yet, going back to the beginning, I was reminded that Sex’s sexies weren’t always so “up-with-estrogen!” The pilot is a much... read more
